Gynaecology Referral Pathway for GPs to Aid Triage
For acute gynaecology (suspected torsion, acute PID, etc..) or acute early pregnancy referrals please consider discussing with Obstetrics and Gynaecology registrar on call prior to referral to ED.
All referrals for out-patient appointments can also be discussed with the Obstetrics and Gynaecology registrar as necessary.

We have prepared this Referral Pathway to help clarify typical routine and urgent gynaecological referral pathways. Basic information to be included on all referrals are:
• age
• parity
• menopausal status
• medication history
• past medical history
• past surgical history
• recent smear result
We have introduced these aid initiatives to improve the waiting times for women who need to attend our Gynaecology clinics. Women waiting for a routine appointment may benefit from initial treatment in the primary care setting while waiting for their hospital appointment.
We also have included information which can aid appropriate triage for these symptoms.
Additionally, the vast majority of gynaecological conditions can have primary investigations and management instigated in primary care.

Gynaecology Referral Information for GPs/Other Hospitals
For safety and efficiency all gynaecology outpatient referrals should be submitted electronically.
GPs should refer electronically via Healthlink. Healthlink referrals are integrated into our hospital system within 24 hours.
Please note we will stop accepting referrals by post from 1st January 2025
To avoid unnecessary delays in the referral process, please ensure the following minimum dataset is included:
- Notification of any impairment, for example: communication difficulties; learning disability; mobility difficulties; visual disturbance
- Patient name
- Patient date of birth
- Patient address
- Patient contact details (mobile/home phone number/email)
- Name and contact details of referrer
- Patient previous hospital number (if applicable)
- Full reports of completed investigations attached on Heathlink referral form.
All referrals are triaged by a consultant; clinical priority is based on information provided on the referral form. Please include results / full reports of any completed investigations, and any relevant medical correspondence with the completed referral. Incomplete referrals will be returned.
Please do not refer patients opting for Private Gynaecology Care to the Public Gynaecology Outpatient Clinic. Referrals should be directed to our consultants offering private care by Heathlink to Rotunda Private.
Fertility Hub GP Information
The Fertility Hub offers fertility advice, investigations and treatment for eligible couples experiencing fertility issues.
The Rotunda Fertility Hub is based in the Rotunda Gynaecology outpatient Department in Dublin. It is one of six Regional Fertility Hubs in Ireland. The Rotunda Hub caters for people residing within the specified catchment areas.

Please find below request form, pathway and instructions for referral of blood samples of women, who are experiencing a crisis pregnancy, and within the catchment area of the Rotunda Hospital (7-9 weeks gestation), to determine Rhesus D (RHD) status

GP Referral pathway Rotunda Menopause Clinic
Condition:
- postmenopausal bleeding on HRT : REFER directly for hysteroscopy / as per PMB guidelines
Referrals for women with a complex medical history:
(Please include the following with referral)
- Breast Cancer: relevant correspondence regarding diagnosis, most recent mammogram/ screening.
- Abnormal LFTs: recent liver function results and any relevant correspondence regarding diagnosis
- Epilepsy: current medications, information re. seizure control, contraceptive history
- Estrogen -dependent cancers: correspondence regarding diagnosis and information about treatment/ surgery etc.
- Migraine: please outline if there is a history of aura/ catamenial migraine
- VTE: spontaneous/ precipitated, contraceptive history, current risk factors for VTE. Information regarding anticoagulation
- Family history of breast cancer: outline family members and any information about diagnosis. Recent mammogram/ screening results.
- Ischemic Heart Disease/ Stroke: information regarding diagnosis, documentation regarding most recent cardiac investigations, recent BP and lipids, smoking status
- Premature Ovarian Insufficiency: >4 months of amenorrhoea, with no other cause. Bloodwork; 2 x FSH levels taken > 6 weeks apart, LH, estradiol, prolactin level, TFTs,
For all referrals:
– Please note referral to the Rotunda Menopause Clinic is by GP only through Healthlink.
– Please include a list of current medications, outline any previous HRT and hormonal contraceptive history, most recent BP, record of most recent screening (eg mammogram, cervical smear, DEXA) and any pelvic ultrasound/ imaging results
Complex Menopause Referral Criteria:
Past or current medical history of:
- Current or past history of cancer (particularly breast or other gynaecological cancers)
- Abnormal liver function
- Venous thromboembolism/ Factor V Leiden
- Cardiovascular disease / Vascular disease
- Cerebrovascular accident
- Epilepsy
- Premature Ovarian Insufficiency/ surgical or medical menopause
- Immunological diseases
- Significant Family history of breast / ovarian or endometrial cancer
- Patients with a history of BRCA diagnosis
