Executive Management Team
Following his term as Master he became Head of Maternal Fetal Medicine in the Coombe Hospital. In 2005 Sean was appointed to the teaching staff of Trinity College Dublin as a Full Clinical Professor. He started and ran several important high risk pregnancy services, notably the multiple births service and a national service for the diagnosis and management of fetal congenital heart disease. He led the diabetic service in the Coombe Hospital for more than 20 years with Prof. Brendan Kinsley from the Mater Hospital. In 2014 Sean introduced a preterm birth prevention clinic and he has specific training in the management of women at risk of delivering early. He has published widely in the areas of prenatal diagnosis, diabetes, twins, fetal growth and preterm birth.
In 2021 Sean decided to seek a new challenge and was appointed Associate Clinical Director with responsibility for maternity services in Cavan and Drogheda hospitals and a consultant in maternal fetal medicine in the Rotunda Hospital. In 2023 Sean began his term as the 40th Master of the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin.
With over thirty years’ experience and having held Mastership of the Coombe Hospital and now of the Rotunda Hospital, a first in Ireland, Sean’s philosophy is that of evidenced based, holistic care for mother and baby.
MR JIM HUSSEY
MSc in Leadership and Change Management and ACMA (Chartered Management Accountant)
Jim was appointed as Secretary/General Manager in March 2018. Jim has worked in healthcare since 2002; firstly as a Senior Finance Manager in St. Vincent’s University Hospital and then in the Rotunda as Head of Finance and Procurement from March 2015 until February 2018. In both organisations he ensured the achievement of a financial breakeven position on an annual basis, despite funding challenges, while ensuring clinical services were not impacted adversely. He attributes this to collaboration with multidisciplinary colleagues, being a good team worker, an effective communicator and not being averse to making difficult decisions. He has led and participated in numerous quality initiatives and service improvements including accreditation, the development of clinical services buildings and other infrastructure and service improvements. He is a change management champion.
By profession he is a Chartered Management Accountant. He has a Diploma in Management Finance and a National Certificate in Business Studies. In 2011, he completed an MSc in Leadership and Change Management from the Royal College of Surgeons. This has provided him with the skill set, knowledge and awareness of the multi-faceted requirements for leadership and how to successfully implement change in healthcare. His thesis was entitled ʿa communication strategy for change in an acute hospital setting’, which was successfully utilised in a major change management project.
In 2014, he was nominated to participate in the Common Purpose (Meridian) programme, which brings together a diverse group of leaders from the private, public and not for profit sectors from across Dublin. ‘Meridian’ improves the participants capacity to lead, effect change, and expand their networks by investigating real-life challenges in the local area, visit small businesses, multinational corporations and various government institutions. They share leadership experiences and challenges with a wide variety of diverse leaders with proven track records of leading through change. He obtained a Professional Certificate in Governance from the Institute of Public Administration in 2017, to ensure he could provide maximum support to the Board on governance and compliance issues. He also has a Diploma in Employment Law.
His focus and priority for the years ahead is to ensure that the Rotunda Hospital as a Voluntary service provider continues to innovate and lead in women’s healthcare service provision in a modern state of the art facility, while working in tandem with statutory hospitals to ensure a high performing healthcare system. He is committed to ensuring that the Rotunda Hospital adheres to the core principles of the Rotunda Charter, which is to provide “skilled persons, covering, lodging and sustenance as are necessary and for those that are in need”.
Ms Fiona Hanrahan
Fiona holds the post of Director of Midwifery/Nursing (DOM/N) at the Rotunda Hospital Dublin. Fiona trained as a general nurse in Ireland and as a midwife in the UK. She worked in an integrated hospital/community team midwifery role in the UK until returning to Ireland in 2002. Since commencing at the Rotunda Hospital, Fiona has worked in a variety of roles including postnatal ward manager and delivery suite co-ordinator. As a CMM3, Fiona developed the Rotunda Hospital’s community midwifery services including the DOMINO and Early Transfer Home (ETH) models of care. Fiona was promoted to Assistant Director of Midwifery and Nursing in 2009 and her main area of interest included promotion of integrated midwifery care for women with high risk pregnancies. Fiona subsequently took up the post of Director of Midwifery and Nursing at the Rotunda Hospital on the 2nd July 2018.

Subspecialist in maternal fetal medicine
Dr Jennifer Donnelly’s practice focuses on high risk obstetric care and obstetric ultrasound. Her clinical areas of interest include prenatal screening and diagnosis, high risk pregnancy, maternal medical complications of pregnancy, early pregnancy loss, and general obstetric care. Her practice offers prenatal screening for chromosomal abnormality, prenatal diagnostic techniques including amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling (CVS) and advanced prenatal ultrasound services.
She is the obstetric lead of the combined Rotunda Hospital/Mater Misericordiae University Hospital service for women with congenital cardiac conditions and the Maternal Medicine Multidisciplinary Team. She provides an obstetric consult service to the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital.
Jennifer graduated from Trinity College Dublin in 1997. She commenced training in obstetrics and gynaecology in Dublin followed by the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. She then pursued higher specialist training in obstetrics and gynaecology at all three Dublin Maternity Hospitals, Our Lady of Lourdes, Drogheda and St James’s Hospital, Dublin.
Jennifer worked as Assistant Master at the Rotunda and then completed an RCOG Maternal Fetal Medicine fellowship programme in Ireland (Rotunda Hospital/Coombe Women and Infants University Hospital) and in Columbia University Medical Center, New York.
Professor Donnelly was appointed Clinical Director at The Rotunda Hospital in 2023.
She has published and presented internationally on venous thromboembolism in pregnancy, microarray in prenatal diagnosis, and prenatal screening for fetal abnormality.

Neonatology
Consultant Neonatologist
Dr David Corcoran is a paediatrician with a special interest in the newborn infant.
He is a graduate of University College Dublin. He completed his higher speciality training in Belfast as a general paediatrician before moving to Vancouver, Canada for three years to specialise in newborn and preterm infants. He obtained his doctorate through the Queen’s University, Belfast in 1997.
He has been a consultant in the Rotunda since 1999. He is particularly interested in respiratory and heart problems in premature infants and also specialises in the care of infants and toddlers.
David has some practical experience in the area of paediatrics as he is married with five children.
Consultant neonatologist
Dr Adrienne Foran’s special areas of interest are newborn intensive care brain monitoring, MRI imaging and care of extremely preterm babies.
She graduated from Trinity College in 1996. She trained in the National Maternity Hospital where she completed her post doctoral thesis (MD) in brainwave tracing in babies at risk of brain injury.
Dr Foran tutored in the RCSI Temple Street before completing her specialist registrar training in the Imperial College, Hammersmith, London where she worked for a year as a consultant before she took a post in the Rotunda Hospital as a consultant neonatologist in September 2007.
Dr Foran is married with three children.
Consultant neonatologist
Prof EL-Khuffash is a Consultant Neonatologist and Paediatrician. His two primary clinical and research areas of expertise are heart function in neonates and the promotion of breast feeding, and breast feeding support, to new mothers. He is the lead for neonatal echocardiography and heart function assessment in the neonatal intensive care unit in the Rotunda Hospital.
Prof EL-Khuffash has considerable knowledge of breast feeding medicine and experience in providing antenatal and postnatal breast feeding advice and support to new mothers. This includes identifying and addressing challenges to breastfeeding in both the mother and the baby. Prof EL-Khuffash is currently in the process of gaining formal qualification as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant.
In addition to his certified neonatal fellowship training, Prof EL-Khuffash completed a fellowship in neonatal cardiology in Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin. He has explored the use of novel technology in monitoring the cardiovascular function of preterm and sick term infants and was part devising the only neonatal echo training course in Canada. He co-devised the world’s first echo teaching website and mobile device app. Recently, Prof EL-Khuffash has assumed a leadership role at a European level in devising training guidelines for echocardiography by the Neonatologist. He is the lead editor of the Haemodynamic Module in the NOTE project, offering a new international online Masters level educational programme in neonatal medicine as collaboration between the European Society for Neonatology (ESN) and the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Southampton.
Prof EL-Khuffash graduated from Trinity College, Dublin in 2002 and enrolled in the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland paediatric specialist training scheme in 2005. He completed a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree in University College, Dublin in 2008 and his neonatal specialty training in Toronto, Canada (2009-2011). Following this, he was appointed as a consultant Neonatologist and Assistant Professor of Paediatrics at the University of Toronto in January of 2011. He obtained a diploma in clinical epidemiology during his time in Toronto.
He is the recipient of several national and international research awards, with international peer reviewed publications and keynote presentations and the lead for cardiovascular research, supervising several post graduate PhD candidates.
Prof EL-Khuffash sees families for prenatal breast feeding and fetal anomaly consultations and postnatal infant assessment, 2 and 6 week checks, and breast feeding support in his consultation rooms in the Rotunda Private Clinic.
Consultant Neonatologist
Dr Breda Hayes was appointed as a consultant neonatologist in the Rotunda Hospital in 2012. Her special areas of interest are newborn babies with neurological issues, newborn intensive care brain monitoring, and the care of extremely preterm babies.
Dr Hayes graduated from University College Cork in 2002. Breda pursued higher specialist training in paediatrics at the Rotunda Hospital and The Children’s University Hospital, Temple Street. She completed her post doctoral thesis (MD) in term hypoxic ischaemic brain injury in 2010 before completing a two year neonatal neurology fellowship programme in the Children’s Hospital, Boston.
She has published and presented internationally on neonatal encephalopathy in the term newborn babies.
Breda is married with two children.
Consultant neonatologist
Dr. Michael Boyle was appointed as a consultant neonatologist in the Rotunda Hospital in 2016. His particular areas of interest are newborn infants with neurological issues, infants with surgical conditions and the care of the extremely preterm infant.
Dr. Boyle graduated from University College Dublin in 2004. Michael completed his higher specialist training in Ireland before further training in the UK. He completed a clinical neonatal and transport fellowship at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge. Michael was also appointed chief resident before a consultant position prior to returning to Ireland. He completed his doctoral thesis (PhD) on neuroimaging in infants with growth restriction in 2016 through the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.
Dr. Boyle has a keen interest in education, particularly in teaching cranial ultrasound to trainee neonatologists and a research interest in neuroimaging using ultrasound and MRI.

Associate Professor of Neonatology
Professor Naomi McCallion’s specialist areas of interest are in neonatal ventilation and lung disease. Her current research also examines haemostasis in the very preterm infant.
She is a graduate of University College Dublin. She has trained in Ireland, Australia and the United Kingdom, and completed her Doctoral thesis on neonatal ventilation at the Royal Women’s Hospital, Melbourne.
Professor McCallion has a keen interest in medical education and is responsible for the neonatology undergraduate program for the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and neonatology training for the MSc program in Advanced Nurse Practice with the RCSI.
She is also a mum, and is lucky enough to have three great children.
Consultant Neonatologist
Dr Margaret Moran was appointed as a Consultant Neonatologist working in the Rotunda Hospital and Children’s Health Ireland at Temple Street in 2018. Her special areas of interest include caring for newborns with complex medical conditions and those requiring surgery in the newborn period. She also has a special interest in the newborn brain and developmental follow-up of infants following neonatal intensive care.
Dr Moran graduated from the National University of Ireland, Galway in 2002. She completed her higher specialist training in Paediatrics and Neonatology in Ireland and Melbourne, Australia. Margaret completed her Doctoral thesis (DMedSci) at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne looking at brain imaging in neonates undergoing surgery, their neurological risk factors and their development over the first two years of life. Margaret worked as a consultant in Melbourne for 5 years before returning to Dublin in 2018.
Dr Moran is married and a lucky mother to four wonderful children. She is passionate about breast feeding and supporting new families. She has completed a professional certificate in breastfeeding and lactation through UCD. Margaret is in the process of gaining formal qualification as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant.

Consultant in obstetrics & gynaecology
Associate professor of obstetrics & gynaecology, RCSI
As a certified specialist in Maternal Fetal Medicine at the Rotunda, Professor Breathnach’s practice focuses on obstetric care, particularly on obstetric ultrasound. Her clinical areas of interest include high risk pregnancy, prenatal screening and diagnosis, and twin pregnancy. Her practice offers prenatal screening for chromosomal abnormality, prenatal diagnostic techniques including amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling (CVS), non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) and advanced prenatal ultrasound services.
She is the lead obstetrician in the combined obstetric-endocrine service at the Rotunda. Together with a consultant specialist endocrinologist, dietician and specialist midwives, this team provides coordinated prenatal and postnatal care for women with diabetes in pregnancy. She completed her doctorate thesis on thyroid function in pregnancy.
Fionnuala also offers integrated prenatal care to women whose pregnancies have been complicated by a prenatal diagnosis of fetal congenital heart disease. This service is coordinated with our paediatric cardiology colleagues in Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin.
Professor Breathnach graduated from Trinity College Dublin in 1997. She pursued higher specialist training in obstetrics and gynaecology at the Rotunda Hospital, Coombe Women and Infants’ University Hospital and St. James’s Hospital in Dublin. She worked as assistant master at the Rotunda from 2004 to 2005 before completing a maternal fetal medicine fellowship programme in the Rotunda Hospital and in Columbia University Medical Center, New York.
The recipient of several research awards, she has published and presented internationally on endocrine disease in pregnancy, prenatal diagnosis and prenatal screening for fetal abnormality. She is the lead researcher on a multicentre national study on twin pregnancy in Ireland.
As associate professor in maternal fetal medicine with the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, she is involved in research and medical education at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology
Dr Kushal Chummun is a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist in the Rotunda and Connolly Hospital. Dr Kushal provides a general obstetric and a wide range of benign gynaecology service. His area of expertise is minimally invasive gynaecology surgery which provides less pain, quicker recovery and shorter hospital stay. He is also a certified colposcopist and robotic gynaecology surgeon.
Dr Kushal qualified in UCD in 2004. Following his internship he did a postgraduate Master of Science degree with the Conway Institute of Biomolecular and Biomedical Research Centre in UCD and also tutored anatomy. He was awarded first class honours and the Coombe Masters research medal. He has throughout his career been involved in research and teaching which as he says “keeps him constantly up to date with changes and advances in medicine”. He also has a number of publications in reputable peer reviewed journals.
Dr Kushal has successfully completed his specialist training in the highly competitive Irish training scheme and has worked in a number of hospitals across the country including the 4 busiest maternity hospitals namely the Rotunda, National Maternity, Coombe Women and Infants University and Cork University Maternity Hospitals where he has gained significant experience managing all aspects of pregnancy.
He also did a fellowship in advance pelvic surgery and gynaecology laparoscopy in the Mater Hospital and was trained in robotic gynaecology surgery in Cork University Maternity Hospital. As part of his dedication to gynaecology and especially minimally invasive surgery he has taken courses and observership programs in Detroit, Sydney and London.
Dr Kushal is married and has two children.

Dr Sharon Cooley is a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist and lead audit clinician for the hospital. Her main clinical areas of interest are obstetric ultrasound and prenatal diagnosis, early pregnancy loss, recurrent pregnancy loss, maternal medicine and general obstetric care. She also runs a general gynaecology service.
She is the Clinical Lead for the Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit and has a special interest in complicated pregnancies and pregnancy loss. Sharon is involved in ongoing research and audit in the Rotunda and has a number of major research projects currently underway in the area of maternal medicine. She has also collaborated with international research.
Sharon graduated from the National University of Ireland Galway in 1997 and has worked as a lecturer for Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland as well as an honorary lecturer for the University of Birmingham. She maintains an active role in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and is an Honorary Lecturer for the Royal College of Surgeons.
She completed an award winning doctorate in clotting disorders in pregnancy and has received many academic awards at both national and international scientific meetings. She has trained nationally and internationally and returned to the Rotunda as assistant master in 2008.
Sharon is a member of the executive for the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Ireland and a member of the working party for the National Clinical Advisory Group, responsible for the development of national evidence based guidelines for obstetrics and gynaecology in Ireland.
She is married with three children.

Professor Sam Coulter-Smith was Master of the Rotunda Hospital from January 2009 to December 2015. During his Mastership he devoted much of his time to ensuring quality and safety standards were maintained at the Rotunda, and raised the profile of maternity services onto the national stage.
He has been a consultant in the Rotunda since 2002. During this time he developed a special interest in the area of infection in pregnancy. He was also instrumental in expanding the diabetes service at the hospital and also has a big interest in complications of early pregnancy.
He has an interest in gynaecology, particularly familial ovarian cancer and pelvic floor surgery.
Professor Sam Coulter-Smith qualified from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1987. His initial training in obstetrics and gynaecology was done at the Rotunda Hospital before moving to the United Kingdom where he completed his MRCOG and obtained further experience and training in the Hammersmith Hospital, Kings College Hospital, London, and the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead.
While in the UK he did his clinical research in the area of familial ovarian cancer screening and transvaginal ultrasound. He returned to the Rotunda Hospital as Assistant Master in 1996 and rotated between the Rotunda and the National Maternity Hospital as a senior registrar until 2002 when he was appointed as consultant in the Rotunda.
Professor Coulter-Smith is a clinical professor attached to the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland and has a keen interest in training of both under graduate and post graduate students.
He also plays an important role within the Institute of Obstetricians & Gynaecologist of Ireland and is a strong advocate for the improvement of maternity services in Ireland. He is also a member of the Women’s Health Council.
He is a regular contributor to the media in relation to all aspects of maternity and childbirth and he is married with three children. He continues to maintain both his public and private practice at the Rotunda.

Niamh is a consultant in obstetrics and gynaecology and a certified specialist in benign advanced gynaecology.
Niamh graduated from UCD in 2004. She completed her higher specialist training in obstetrics and gynaecology in Ireland. She has worked in the Rotunda, the National Maternity Hospital, St Vincent’s University Hospital, St Michael’s Hospital, the Coombe Women and Infants University Hospital, Our Lady of Lourdes hospital, Limerick Maternity Hospital and St James’s Hospital. Niamh spent 4 years at the UCD Centre for Human Reproduction at the Coombe Hospital researching exercise and its role in preventing diabetes in pregnancy and was awarded a PhD by UCD in 2018. She completed a surgical fellowship in Benign Advanced Gynaecology at St James’s Hospital in 2019.
Niamh has a wide range of experience including general obstetrics and antenatal care, delivery and labour ward management, management of early pregnancy complications including miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy, fertility investigation, management of PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), postmenopausal bleeding, menstrual disorders, endometriosis, fibroids, ovarian cysts, prolapse and hysterectomy. Niamh performs both laparoscopic (“keyhole”) and open gynaecologic surgery.

Dr Maeve Eogan graduated from University College Dublin in 1996 and completed Higher Specialist Training in the three Dublin Maternity Hospitals, the Mater University Hospital and Galway University Hospital. During her training, Dr Eogan also worked as clinical lecturer for UCD, based at the National Maternity Hospital, and developed her interest and expertise in complicated vaginal delivery and postnatal care. She has published and presented her research findings internationally. Prior to working at the Rotunda, Dr Eogan worked as a Consultant at the National Maternity Hospital and Merrion Fertility Clinic.
Dr Eogan has been a Consultant in the Rotunda since 2009. She provides obstetric services as well as a clinic specifically for women who have sustained anal sphincter injury at vaginal delivery or who have other postnatal complications. Dr Eogan also takes care of women with infectious diseases or addiction issues during pregnancy and is very involved with postgraduate education at the Rotunda. Dr Eogan also works at the Sexual Assault Treatment Unit and is National Specialty Director for Postgraduate Training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at RCPI . Dr Eogan is an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at RCSI.
Maeve was delighted to be awarded ‘Obstetrician of the Year’ at Boots Maternity and Infant Awards in November 2015 and also to be awarded ‘Top Obstetrician’ at the Mum’s and Tots Awards in both 2016 and 2017.
She is married with two children.

Karen’s main clinical areas of interest include early pregnancy loss, twin pregnancy and high risk obstetrics. She is currently the lead clinician for the early pregnancy service and recurrent pregnancy loss clinic. As a certified specialist in maternal fetal medicine she offers prenatal screening for chromosomal abnormality, prenatal diagnostic techniques including amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling (CVS) and advanced prenatal ultrasound services. She also runs a general gynaecology service. As a certified specialist in maternal fetal medicine, Karen’s practice focuses on obstetric care, particularly on obstetric ultrasound. Her clinical areas of interest include early pregnancy complications, prenatal screening and diagnosis, and multiple pregnancies. She offers prenatal screening for chromosomal abnormality, prenatal diagnostic techniques including amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling (CVS) and non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT). She also performs advanced prenatal ultrasound including fetal echocardiography.
Karen is the lead obstetrician in the recurrent pregnancy loss clinic in the Rotunda. This service provides couples with thorough investigation related to their pregnancy loss, in addition to dedicated early pregnancy support with frequent ultrasound monitoring and counselling. She also runs a general gynaecology service.
Dr Karen Flood graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2001. Karen has pursued higher specialist training in obstetrics and gynaecology at the three Dublin Maternity Hospitals, Cork University Maternity Hospital and the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital. She worked as Assistant Master at the Rotunda in 2013 following completion of a maternal fetal medicine fellowship programme in the Rotunda Hospital and in Columbia University Medical Center, New York. She completed her doctorate thesis on platelet function in pregnancy loss.
As the recipient of several research awards, Karen has published and presented internationally on platelet function in pregnancy, prenatal diagnosis and screening. She is involved in ongoing research in the area of perinatal genetics. As senior lecturer with the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, she is involved in research and medical education at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Eve Gaughan is a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist working in the Rotunda Hospital and the James Connolly Memorial Hospital in Blanchardstown.
After graduating from the Royal College of Surgeons in 2002, Eve went on to pursue her higher specialist training in general obstetrics and gynaecology at the three Dublin Maternity Hospitals, Cork University Maternity Hospital and the Mater Hospital. She was Assistant Master in the National Maternity Hospital in 2011-2012 and in the Coombe Hospital in 2012-2013.
She has undertaken a fellowship in gynae pelvic surgery in the Mater Hospital and an Ambulatory Gynaecology and Minimal Access fellowship with special interest in pelvic pain and endometriosis in Worthing and Brighton Hospitals in the UK. She is currently completing a masters in Advanced Gynaecological Endoscopy in the University of Surrey in the UK.
Eve specialises in minimal access gynaecology, including laparoscopic management of ovarian cysts, the provision of laparoscopic hysterectomy and hysteroscopic removal of fibroids and endometrial ablation for heavy periods. She has a special interest in pelvic pain and endometriosis.
Eve established the Out-Patient Hysteroscopy service for the Rotunda in 2016 and is the clinical lead for this department. She specialises in the out-patient investigation of abnormal bleeding and the treatment of polyps and small fibroids under local anaesthetic.
As a certified colposcopist, she performs colposcopy clinics for the management of abnormal cervical smear tests.
She enjoys research and teaching and is a minimal access instructor for the higher specialist training scheme. Research areas of interest include ovarian cancer risk reduction.

Professor Michael Geary qualified from the National University of Ireland Galway in 1989. His specialist work in Obstetrics and Gynaecology has been undertaken in Dublin, London and Toronto. He works primarily in the area of maternal-fetal medicine and high-risk obstetrics. He has received many academic awards at national and international level. Michael held the position of Master of the Rotunda from 2002 to 2008.
With almost 30 years of experience in the specialty, he has been driven by a desire to constantly improve and optimise safe outcomes for mothers and babies. His approach to care is to ensure that his patients are well informed and that their care is tailored to their individual needs and circumstances. His motivation is for safety first while ensuring patients and partners have a positive and happy birth experience.
After initial training in the specialty in Dublin, Mike did further postgraduate training in the UK. While conducting clinical research at University College Hospital London, he completed his medical doctorate. After completing his specialist training he did sub-specialty training in Maternal Fetal Medicine at the University of Toronto, one of the busiest training programs in North America. He worked at Mount Sinai Hospital and the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. Michael has Fellowships from the Royal Colleges in both the UK and Ireland, and is certified in Advanced Obstetric Ultrasound by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and the Royal College of Radiologists.
Mike was appointed Chief Executive Officer/Master of the Rotunda in January 2002 and has held academic appointments as Professor at Trinity College and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. During his seven-year term as Master, he was instrumental in leading the team to many new clinical and quality improvement innovations in order to enhance patient care. Following this term, Mike worked as a consultant at the Rotunda before taking up the post of Chief of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto and Professor of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at the University of Toronto in 2014. While working as a subspecialist in maternal fetal medicine at St Michael’s, he was the Lead for Obstetrics on the Quality Improvement & Patient Safety committee at the university. During this time he was central to leading change and quality improvement across the Greater Toronto Area for postpartum haemorrhage, caesarean section audit, and optimising management of medical emergencies in labour.
Recognising the power of academic partnership, Mike is particularly interested in fostering research collaborations nationally and internationally and is a founding member of the highly successful Perinatal Ireland Research Consortium. More recently, he was involved in setting up the Greater Toronto Area OBGYN Clinical Research Network in 2014. Throughout his career, he has led and collaborated in a large number of research programs, including international randomized trials and cohort studies. He has wide research interests in the areas of low and high risk pregnancy, which includes a focus on fetal growth, labour, twins, and the effects of hypertension/diabetes/obesity on the mother and fetus. More recently he has directed his attention towards quality improvement and safe systems of care for mother and baby.
Mike is committed to education of medical and midwifery students, and postgraduate trainees in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He has supervised and mentored numerous trainees in research, many of whom have completed medical doctorates.
Mike returned to the Rotunda in September 2017 as Consultant in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, and has also been appointed Director of Labour & Delivery. He has resumed his position as Professor of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and continues to hold an honorary academic appointment as Professor of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at the University of Toronto.
Mike’s practice provides 24 hour a day availability. He practices from two convenient offices in Dublin, one based on the Northside at the Rotunda and one based on the Southside at the Evie Clinic in Sandyford.
A graduate of Trinity College, Dublin, Dr Kent’s initial training was in the three Dublin maternity hospitals, during which time she was Assistant Master in the National Maternity Hospital. Thereafter she completed a Maternal-Fetal Medicine fellowship programme between Dublin (Rotunda Hospital/Coombe) and New York (Columbia University Medical Center), before being appointed to a consultant post in Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospitals, one of the United Kingdom’s leading maternity & fetal medicine units.
Along with her clinical work, Dr Kent has an established track record in clinical research, with multiple publications in leading obstetric journals, and has been an invited speaker at major national and international conferences. She is helping to shape the training of the next generation of obstetricians & gynaecologists in her role as a head of Basic Specialist Training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology with the Royal College of Physicians, Ireland.

Nicola Maher
Dr Nicola Maher is a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with a special interest in maternal medical complications of pregnancy, labour ward management, early pregnancy and general gynaecology. She is the lead consultant in the antenatal clinic for women with epilepsy and part of the maternal medicine team.
Nicola originally graduated from Trinity College in 1997 with a degree in pharmacy and worked as a pharmacist before pursuing a career in medicine. She studied in UCD Medical School and subsequently graduated in 2007. She then underwent higher specialist training in obstetrics and gynaecology in Ireland, gaining experience in all three Dublin maternity hospitals, University Hospital Limerick and Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.
In 2016, Nicola worked as Assistant Master at the Rotunda and again in 2018 at the Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital. Alongside her experience in maternal medicine, Nicola has an interest in labour ward obstetrics and management of benign gynaecological conditions.
She is one of the team of consultants providing out-patient hysteroscopy at Connolly Hospital. Nicola has contributed to national clinical guidelines and is heavily involved in teaching and training the junior doctors at the Rotunda.

Professor of obstetrics & gynaecology
He was appointed Professor and Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2005. The RCSI School of Medicine is the largest in Ireland, and also has Schools of Medicine in Bahrain, Penang, and Kuala Lumpur. In addition to these academic leadership roles, he has extensive experience in national leadership in healthcare management, and is currently the Clinical Director for Women and Children at the RCSI Hospitals Group, the largest hospital network in Ireland.
Professor Malone is a specialist in maternal-fetal medicine, which is the area of obstetrics that focuses on high-risk pregnancy, multiple gestation management, and fetal therapy. He provides advanced obstetric ultrasound and all forms of prenatal diagnostic services, including amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling (CVS), fetal blood sampling and fetal treatment procedures, such as intrauterine fetal laser surgery and fetal transfusions.
He qualified from University College Dublin in 1991, and completed residency training in obstetrics and gynaecology followed by fellowship training in maternal-fetal medicine at Tufts University-New England Medical Center in Boston. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in both obstetrics and in maternal-fetal medicine, and he has also been elected a Fellow of both the American and Royal Colleges of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
During his time at Columbia University in New York, Professor Malone was responsible for world class research developments in obstetric ultrasound, prenatal diagnosis, and maternal-fetal medicine. He directed the National Institutes of Health Maternal-Fetal Medicine Units Research Network in New York.
Since returning to Ireland, he has established the Perinatal Ireland research consortium which has been responsible for world class research outputs in twin pregnancy, fetal growth restriction and difficult labour.

Dr Mocanu’s main interests are male and female infertility, the genetics of male infertility and reproductive surgery.
He was appointed as a consultant obstetrician & gynaecologist to the Rotunda in 2005. He holds infertility clinics in the main hospital and also in the Rotunda Private Clinics. He is involved with the practical and theoretical teaching of students attached to the Rotunda Hospital.
Dr Edgar Mocanu qualified in 1993 from Cluj-Napoca Medical University, Romania. He trained in general obstetrics and gynaecology in Cluj-Napoca, Romania and the Coombe Women’s Hospital, St. James’s Hospital, Rotunda Hospital and National Maternity Hospital in Ireland.
He holds a certificate of specialist training (CST) in obstetrics and gynaecology and is registered in the specialists register of the Medical Council. He is sub-specialty trained in reproductive medicine and surgery under the guidance of the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists in London. His sub-specialty training was based at the HARI Unit where he worked with Professor Robert F Harrison.
As part of this training he also worked at the Mater Hospital, St. Vincent’s Hospital, Tallaght Hospital and the Coombe Women’s Hospital.

Dr. Sieglinde (Siggy) Mullers is a Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist and a certified specialist in Maternal and Fetal Medicine. She is primarily based in the Rotunda Hospital. Her special interests include prenatal diagnosis, advanced obstetric ultrasound, multiple pregnancy, fetal echocardiography, high-risk obstetrics and labour ward management. She also practices benign gynecology.
Originally from Galway, Siggy qualified with an honours degree from NUIG. She went on to complete Higher Specialist Training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the Rotunda Hospital, University Hospital Galway and Our lady of Lourdes Hospital Drogheda, and has been working in the specialty for over ten years. She recently completed a Fellowship in Maternal Fetal Medicine in Dublin and Columbia University Medical Centre, New York. While in New York her focus was primarily in high-risk pregnancies including multiple pregnancy.
During the course of her clinical training, she was also awarded a PhD by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland for her research work investigating platelet function in placental disease. Her research has led her to develop an interest in the prevention of preeclampsia and managing pregnancies at risk of fetal growth restriction.
She is the Rotunda hospital’s lead colposcopist. She has an interest in benign gynaecology including menstrual problems and menopause care.
She spent 2 years working in the UCD Centre for Human Reproduction exploring the relationship between maternal body composition and caesarean section. She has a medical doctorate and has published extensively on the topic of caesarean section.

Dr Meena Ramphul is a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist in the Rotunda Hospital. Meena is passionate about improving the wellbeing of women throughout their lives and providing personalised care throughout their pregnancy journey. She went to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, to pursue a fellowship in complex benign gynaecology whilst practising obstetrics and teaching medicine. Meena has a keen interest in advanced laparoscopic surgery, ambulatory gynaecology and pelvic floor surgery. Meena also has established experience in labour ward management, complex births and postnatal care. She runs specialist clinics in menstrual dysfunction, endometriosis, outpatient hysteroscopy, manual vacuum aspiration (award winning clinic) as well as a multidisciplinary complex postnatal clinic in the Rotunda Hospital.
Meena was awarded a PhD in Obstetrics by Trinity College Dublin in 2014. Her PhD investigated the role of ultrasound to enhance diagnosis of the foetal head position before instrumental deliveries. Her body of research has shaped international guidelines in intrapartum care and led to multiple publications.

Consultant Gynaecologist. Beaumont/Rotunda Hospital Dr Rajab has been working in Beaumont/Rotunda Hospitals as consultant gynaecologist since September 2015. He has 14 years experience in both obstetrics and gynaecology and was a permanent consultant at Our Lady Of Lourdes hospital in Drogheda from 2012-2015.
Dr Rajab has a wide range of interests in general benign gynaecology, pelvic floor reconstructive surgery and urogynecology. He had sub-speciality training in minimal access surgery having completed his training in South London Hospitals.
Dr Rajab’s training includes expertise in advanced laparoscopic surgery such as laparoscopic hysterectomies, myomectomies, ovarian cystectomies and advanced laparoscopic treatment of endometriosis and laparoscopic risk reduction surgery for at risk groups, in addition to general surgical skills required to undertake the safest and most effective gynaecological treatment available for most of gynaecological conditions such as menorrhagia and infertility
Dr Rajab was the Lead of pelvic floor clinic, pelvic floor surgery and urogynaecology at the Lourdes Hospital, he has the expertise in managing all types of pelvic floor prolapse, recurrent prolapse and mesh surgeries, surgical treatment of precedentia and surgical treatment of vault prolapse such as sacrospinous fixation and abdominal vault suspensions and he has the expertise in managing different types of female urinary incontinence such as TVTs, TVTOs for stress , and Botox injection for non medically responsive urge incontinence.
Dr Rajab is a certified colposcopist, has the expertise in managing all types of smear abnormality cases.

Dr Rishi Roopnarinesingh is a consultant in obstetrics and gynaecology. His special interest field is in reproductive medicine and he has worked with both Professor RF Harrison and Dr. Michael Darling at the Rotunda Hospital. He has been trained in the surgical management of female infertility using micro-surgical techniques and has visited centres in London and the United States to enhance the provision of this service at the Rotunda Hospital.
He has a wide range of experience in general obstetrics and gynaecology, laparoscopic surgery, colposcopy and peri-menopausal medicine.
He received his medical degree from the University of the West Indies in June 1993 and has trained in obstetrics and gynaecology in Trinidad (W.I.), Birmingham (UK) and Ireland.
He worked as assistant master at both the Rotunda Hospital and the National Maternity Hospital between 2003 and 2006. Dr Roopnarinesingh has been a member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (UK) since May 1998 and was awarded his Certificate of Completion of Specialists Training in Ireland in 2004. He is also a member of both the Irish and British Fertility Societies and the European Society of Gynaecological Endoscopy (minimal access /'key-hole' surgery).
Dr Roopnarinesingh’s thesis was on hypertensive disorders in pregnancy (high blood pressure) and he has also co-authored a textbook on obstetrics. He has published other scientific papers in general obstetrics and gynaecology and subfertility.
