The Rotunda Hospital is happy to announce the commencement of the stop smoking support service which is facilitated by our dedicated Health Promotion Midwife.

The service which started in September 2022 will offer a mixture of behavioural support and nicotine replacement therapy to help pregnant women to stop smoking for good.

Adele Reddin, Rotunda Health Promotion Midwife said

“Stopping smoking is absolutely the best thing you can do for yourself and your baby during your pregnancy”

The Rotunda team knows that it can be extremely difficult to stop smoking and we will do everything to help pregnant women who want to give their baby the best possible start in life”.

This model of behavioural support is two times more effective in helping smokers stop than with just nicotine replacement treatment, such as patches and gum. Referrals will be made through out-patients department and with the support of the Health Promotion Midwife, patients will discuss smoking habits and set out a plan which includes a Stop Smoking Date.

Adele says “it’s important to know that nearly half of pregnant women who set a stop smoking date with similar programmes go on to stop permanently so.”

“no matter what stage you are at in your pregnancy, it is never too late to stop smoking”.

If you are at any stage in your pregnancy and would like help and support to stop smoking you can email stopsmoking@rotunta.ie and stop for good.
